dc.descriptionCereal prices continue to rise and are nearly reaching the levels of the 2008 food crisis. Negative terms of trade for pastoralist have worsened the already dire food security situation. The estimated number of people requiring emergency assistance continues to increase and has reached 4.8 million. Agencies report a humanitarian emergency. UNHCR is providing emergency aid to some 260,000 refugees who are crossing daily the Ethiopian border to escape starvation, war and insecurity in ne ighbouring countries. The Government is supported by humanitarian agencies to assist the population. It is procuring wheat in order to stabilize domestic prices while also scaling up social safety nets.
