The quantity of leaf litter and the nutrients that trees (Pithecellobium saman and Guazuma ulmifolia), natural pastures (Paspalum conjugatum) and improved pastures (Brachiaria brizantha) in silvopastoral systems were evaluated to determine the contribution of each to nutrient recycling. This study was conducted on private farms in Muy Muy, Nicaragua. In these silvopastoral systems that had low tree densities, the pastures supplied greater quantities of leaf litter than the trees. The soils under the tree canopies showed an increase in the absolute values for the nutrients compared to the areas not influenced by trees.
