Genetic diversity of dairy Gir cattle.

Resumen

Descripción

The Dairy Gir is well-adapted to tropical dairy production conditions and is considered the primary dairy indicine cattle in Brazil. Gir cattle were imported from India during the 19th and 20th centuries, and in 1985, the Brazilian Dairy Gir Breeding Program (PNMGL) was established, focusing on improving milk production. A decrease in the effective population size over the last 50 generations has been reported in the Dairy Gir population. Genetic diversity is a critical factor in breeding programs, as selection leads to more extreme allele frequencies and increased homozygosity, which may reduce the population ability to respond to environmental changes and evolving breeding goals. Therefore, careful planning and continuous monitoring are essential to preserve population diversity. This study aimed to assess genetic diversity in Dairy Gir cattle.
