Resumen

Descripción

Agriculture in Niue is predominantly subsistence, based on shifting cultivation. Increasing food production and productivity, particularly by developing small ruminant production and improving artisanal and traditional fisheries, is a priority of the Government. A key challenge to increasing food production and productivity is the lack of participation of young people in agriculture. The Government requested FAO to assist in enhancing the capacity of young people to engage in sustainable agricultural production by improving the agricultural curriculum at Niue High School. Together with the Government, FAO developed and implemented a project aimed at developing an agricultural curriculum based on the local context and in line with New Zealand standards and qualifications. The curriculum was combined with enhanced agricultural and livestock educational practical activities aimed at young people and with the intention of assisting adults to develop and maintain traditional home gardens.
