Eleven maize cultivars were evaluated under five environments from 1989 to 1993 in the semiarid zones of Sergipe, in randomized blocks with three replications, with the aim of selection of high yielding stable materials. A large amount of variation was detected in the environmental conditions, mainly due to physical soil conditions. Analyses of variance revealed marked differences between the cultivars in response to environmental variation. BR 5011-Sertanejo and BR 106 were productive and showed high levels of adaptability. BR 5028-Sao Francisco, was precocious, adaptable and associated with high productivity. The hybrids Braskalb XL 604, BR 201 and Germinal 500, with a high potential productivity, were adaptable under favourable environments. BR 5033-Asa Branca showed a better level of adaptation under unfavourable environments but unpredictable productive behaviour under the climatic variations studied.
