Descripción

The fisheries industry plays an important role in the Sri Lankan economy, with lobster, sea cucumber, chank, marine ornamental fish and shrimp fetching high prices in the fisheries export market. As a result of the demand, these resources are heavily exploited. Considering their economic and social value, stock assessment surveys were conducted in 2008 and 2009 to establish management regimes for their sustainable utilization, and a co-management mechanism was adopted in the Southern, Eastern and North Western provinces, in line with recommendations made by the surveys. However, because of the continued heavy exploitation of lobster, sea cucumber, chank, marine ornamental fish and shrimp, action was urgently needed to manage and conserve these resources, enhance natural stocks and reactivate co-management plans and committees. The project was designed to support the Government to implement and reactivate co-management committees for the sustainable utilization of the resources listed above. Its main objective was to update the existing management plans and knowledge of the status of fishery stocks and to strengthen community engagement in their implementation.
