In the 2008 crop year, Brazilian wheat production was about 6 x 106 tons (Conab 2009), which is enough to supply only 50% of the domestic demand. This deficit in production makes Brazil one of the world’s largest wheat importers. The south region, comprised of the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná, accounts for 95% of the national production.
