Resumen
Descripción
The apiculture sector in Uzbekistan is an important subsector of agriculture that has yet to reach its full potential. Important production gains are being achieved and in 2016, more than 12 000 beekeeping enterprises in Uzbekistan produced 12 000 tonnes of honey, exceeding the production levels of 2015 by 20 percent. Nevertheless, overall productivity is still quite low with an average honey yield of less than 20 kg per colony per year. Two significant problems limit productivity and development of the sector. First, the transfer of knowledge and technologies to apiculturists is limited by the small number of educational programs on apiculture offered at colleges and universities; only recently have apiculture programs been introduced in various higher education institutions.
