Migration affects the lives of hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Many migrants come from rural areas, where families rely on agriculture and related activities for their livelihoods. In sub-Saharan Africa, around 60 percent of rural migrants are aged between 15 and 34. The loss of the young labour force increases the burden of work on the children, women and elderly left behind. In Nepal, 97 percent of migrants are males aged from 15 to 44, leaving women and girls to take care of the household and agricultural activities.Migration holds great potential to contribute to agriculture and rural development. Diaspora networks and organizations can be mobilized to support development at home by investing money, knowledge and skills. Greater consideration of migration dynamics in agricultural policy and programming can help to maximize the positive effects and improve rural livelihoods. The subprogramme contributed to strengthening policy and programme coherence between migration, poverty reduction and rural and agricultural development at global, regional and country levels. In particular, it supported the target countries (Nepal, Senegal and Uganda) to adopt and implement policies, strategies or programmes promoting sustainable alternatives to migration for rural youth, supporting family members left behind or enhancing the positive impact of migration for agriculture and rural development. The subprogramme also generated knowledge products to address migration issues in the context of rural development and agrifood systems, and raised global awareness of the need for greater attention to rural and agrifood systems in migration work.
