| dc.description | Agriculture is the predominant sector of economies of all South Asian countries and poverty and hunger are the most serious problems faced by this region. Agriculture in this region is caught in a low equilibrium trap with low productivity of staples, supply shortfalls, high prices, low returns to farmers and area diversification which threaten food security. Despite rapid growth of some of the economies, dependence on agriculture as an economic activity has seen a negligible decline.
