FAO and ISPRA co-organized an expert workshop on spatial management for aquaculture planning to help identify the needs of countries seeking support in integrating aquaculture into marine spatial planning. The workshop focused on five priority areas: (i) governance and institutional frameworks; (ii) knowledge support for spatial planning in aquaculture; (iii) criteria and guiding elements for spatial allocation; (iv) capacity building and awareness; and (v) marine conservation and restoration. Experts shared regional and global best practices for incorporating aquaculture into marine spatial planning and for applying spatial tools such as geographic information systems, predictive models, and decision support systems. Case studies were presented from six continents, including North America (Mexico and the United States of America), South America (Brazil and Chile), Europe (Northern Europe, the Mediterranean and Macaronesia), Asia (China and the Philippines), Africa (Lake Victoria and South Africa), and Oceania (Australia and New Zealand). These examples illustrated the range of approaches and challenges encountered when aligning aquaculture development with marine spatial planning frameworks. Across the five priority areas, several key themes emerged. In governance and institutional frameworks, participants highlighted the need for improved coordination among regulatory bodies to streamline planning processes and reduce administrative burdens. Regarding knowledge support, strengthening data systems and promoting the use of spatial tools and innovative technologies were identified as essential for informed decision-making. The workshop concluded with the development of a draft roadmap for improving the integration of aquaculture into marine spatial planning. This roadmap outlines strategic objectives and practical actions to support broader global implementation. Participants also provided input for complementary guidance to facilitate adoption of the roadmap and implementation of related actions.
