This publication presents lessons learned from subregional dynamics, national legal frameworks, and best practices in forest governance in West Africa. It explores various approaches to decentralization, highlighting the role of local authorities in forest management, the importance of securing land tenure rights, and the participation of communities in forestry initiatives. The document also addresses independent forest monitoring, equitable benefit-sharing mechanisms, and the free, prior, and informed consent principle. It aims to guide reforms that foster effective decentralized governance and sustainable forest management in the region.
