The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR) of Azerbaijan could benefit from gradually moving from a mainly self-sufficient agrifood system towards a more diversified, market-oriented approach. Challenges such as geographic isolation, limited market access, ageing infrastructure, small-scale farming, and modest sanitary and phytosanitary measures (SPS) and certification capacity can make it harder for farmers to compete and raise rural incomes. At the same time, Nakhchivan’s rich agricultural heritage, traditional foods, distinctive terroir, and cultural assets provide opportunities for niche exports, Geographical indications (GIs), and agritourism.A phased approach is suggested: in the short term, strengthen institutions and digital systems; in the medium term, modernize SPS measures, water management, and agricultural support services; and in the long term, develop strong quality branding and heritage-based tourism. These steps could help improve market access, diversify incomes, and support sustainable economic growth over time.
