Amid the strong public health focus on women’s nutrition during the crucial first 1 000 days of life, FAO and partners have been collaborating for a number of years on research aimed at developing a globally valid indicator to measure the dietary diversity of women of reproductive age. The new indicator, the Minimum Dietary Diversity – Women (MDD-W), which was first advocated in 2014, constitutes an important step towards filling the need for food-based indicators for use in national and subnational assessments, target setting and advocacy. Given the need for further research to improve the operationalization of the MDD-W, in particular to identify the best method of relevant data collection, a multi-country study following a standardized protocol will be conducted in three countries – Cambodia, Ethiopia and Zambia. The resulting evidence-based user guide will be widely disseminated, contributing to capacity development on MDD-W data collection. In the longer term, meanwhile, the study is expected to strengthen food security and nutrition information systems and support international efforts to promote maternal and child health.
