Global demand for avocados continues to grow rapidly in international markets. While this expansion has created significant economic opportunities for producing countries, it has also raised concerns about the environmental footprint of avocado production and trade, particularly regarding pressure on water resources and greenhouse gas emissions.This study examines how existing carbon and water footprint (CWF) methodologies are currently applied to avocado value chains and gathers insights from industry stakeholders on the role of CWF assessments in improving the sector’s sustainability and performance.The findings highlight the need for standardized, avocado-specific CWF protocols that build on internationally recognized frameworks, cover the full orchard life cycle and account for carbon sequestration potential. The study also recommends developing practical tools adapted to producers’ capacities, strengthening capacity development for farmers and producer organizations and fostering multistakeholder data and knowledge-sharing platforms. Improved, context-aware communication and benchmarking are also essential to avoid misinterpretation and reputational risks, while supporting a more transparent transition toward low-carbon, water-responsible avocado value chains.
