It was organized with the specific purpose of introducing the basic knowledge on the most common techniques and equipment necessary to estimate fish age and growth through the analysis (or reading) of otoliths and other bony structures. This was considered as a first step towards the harmonisation of national expertise i n the field of age and growth studies. The training course was divided into several sessions, during which it was possible to focus on the main aspects regarding the age estimation of fish species, from the setting up of the laboratory equipment to the age estimation of selected specimens and the estimation of growth parameters.
