A study was conducted to determine the tick species present in cattle from the province of Cordoba, Northest of Sucre and Northwest of Antioquia. The work was carried out in 85 herds of 7 zones located in 19 localities of Cordoba, 2 of Sucre and 1 of Antioquia. The herds were randomly selected within 3 strata (small, medium and large) according to their cattle population. In each herd, the tick infestation level was stablished on 30 head of cattle representative of the different ages and sexes in the herd. Infestation levels were designated as: 1 (no ticks), 2 (less than 10 ticks), 3(10 to 50 ticks) and 4 (more than 50 ticks) per animal. The especimens to be identified in each herd were obtained from 3 randomly selected cattle in wich all the tick stages present were collected. Out of 2.261 ticks examined, 2.169 (95.93%) corresponded to Boophilus microplus; 89 (3.93%) were identified as Amblvom'na cajennense and 3 (0.13%) as Derinacentor (Anocentor) nitens. Although B. microplus prevaIled in all zones, the presence of A. cajennense in some of them, suggested a potential problem recuiring special control. In general, infestation levels on the cattle examined were law since the highest percentages corresponded to non infested cattle or cattle with low infestation (level 1), A significant dependence was observed between the degree of tick infestation and the factors zone, breed, season and herd size. The highest tick infestation were detected in the Arboletes (4) zone, on cattle with Bos taunis characteristics, in the dry season and in small herds.
