Hosted by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, the FAO/WECAFC Workshop on assessment of demersal stocks shared by Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela was held in Chaguaramas from 18–22 November 2002 with support from the FAO FishCode Programme. The objectives of the workshop were to encourage assessment of shrimp stocks shared by Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela, evaluate the impact of fishing on shrimp stocks and make recommendations for their management. The main conclusion of the assessmen t carried out during the workshop stated that some shrimp stocks are being severely overfished and are suffering as a result of this. Recommendations were prepared regarding the implementation of fisheries controls, better data collection and future research on the shrimp and groundfish fisheries, including bio-economic modelling.
