The Report of the Eighteenth Session of the Coordinating Working Party on Fishery Statistics (CWP), Luxembourg, Grand Duchy, 6-9 July 1999, is presented. Major topics discussed were: reviews of recommendations from CWP-17; agency programmes in fishery statistics; harmonization among agency databases; exchange and dissemination of information and statistics; STATLANT issues; integrated fisheries monitoring; definition of nationality of catch; major fishing area modifications; statistical impli cations of the Precautionary Approach; elasmobranch statistics; fishery trade data; socio-economic indicators for fisheries (fisher statistics, landing value statistics, and fleet statistics, vessel data and vessel monitoring systems); and future activities of the CWP. Further consideration was given to (a) the recently published Guidelines for the Routine Collection of Capture Fisheries Data (FAO/DANIDA); and (b) the conclusions of the International Conference on Integrated Fisheries Monitori ng. The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission and the Commission on the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna had been admitted as new participating organizations of the CWP. CWP-18 made twenty recommendations.
