In the tropical area, where Cuba is located, weed populations are generally high in the crops; thus, if a group of measures are not settled down for its handling, losses can be higher than 25 % harvests. Even though it has been demonstrated that weeds only cause a direct effect on crops when they surpass the threshold in the critical period of interference, the tendency is to constantly control them and maintain the fields completely weeded. Today, one of the elements which is known to contribute considerably to increase the diversity of agricultural systems is passable levels of weeds, that let the populations of herbivore organisms diminish and the benefic insects increase. This work pretends to approach some topics related with weeds, its handling, its function in the agroecosystem and agroecological benefits, besides deepening on its impact in agriculture and the weedsas a reserve of natural organisms.
