The problems and support needs for the development of small, medium and micro-enterprises
(SMMEs) in the rural areas of South Africa have been little researched. In this paper, the
Phuthaditjhaba area of Free State province is a case study in the developmental problems and
needs of rural non-farm or SMME development in South Africa.
