The FAO Agreement of Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (the PSMA) was approved by the FAO Conference at its Thirty-sixth Session under paragraph 1 of Article XIV of the FAO Constitution. The Agreement, which is binding on the Parties, entered into force on 5 June 2016. As of 17 February 2017, there were 42 Parties to the Agreement, including the European Union. Whilst this represents a major achievement in the global effort to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, the Parties to the PSMA should now work together towards its effective implementation, including by encouraging the non-Parties to adhere to the Agreement.
