Cereal production in Tajikistan, particularly wheat, has been steadily declining since a peak production in 1997. Last year's drought severely impacted the country's already fragile agricultural sector that has faced severe structural problems due in part to the civil strife and political instability of the mid 1990s. Furthermore, shortage of financial and technical resources has also resulted in a near collapse of the country's irrigation systems, agro-processing industries, agricultural input production and supply units, as well as in the severe deterioration of farm machinery and equipment. Reduced rainfall in 2000/2001 has further exacerbated the adverse conditions of the agricultural sector. It is in this context that the Government of Tajikistan requested FAO and WFP assistance in reviewing the country's food situation and outlook for 2001/02 marketing year. Consequently, an FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission was fielded from 19 June to 3 July to estimate the 2001 ce real harvest and cereal import requirement, including food and agricultural assistance needs, for the marketing year 2001/02.
