This study was conducted to assessment forest ecological attributes of classified forest cover type and estimated succession index using the climax index, species diversity and relative density in order to predict successional trend in Gariwangsan(Mt.). Based on the vegetation data collected by the plot(20mx20) sampling method, the study area was classified into five forest cover types by cluster analysis, species indicator analysis, and MRPP-Test. Also, species composition and species diversity were reveal the characteristics of forest cover type. The naming of Forest cover type was based on the composition of overstory dominance species. Recognized forest types were 1) Qurcus mongolica cover type, 2) Betula costata-B. schmidti-Q. mongolica cover type, 3) Mixed mesophytic cover type, 4) Q.mongolica-Ulmus davidiana var. japonica - Acer pictum subsp. mono cover type, 5) Pinus densiflora-Q. mongolica cover type. The succession index was developed through standardization of climax index and relative density of composed tree species plus species diversity index of the corresponding forest cover type. The results showed that Mixed mesophytic forest community had the greatest succession index value of 212.0, followed by Q. mongolica-U. davidiana var. japonica-A. pictum subsp. mono cover type 199.1, Q. mongolica cover type 163.8, B. costata-B. schmidtii-Q. mongolica cover type 148.0, P. densiflora-Q. mongolica cover type had the smallest value of 136.9. It is presumed that the higher value of succession index in a certain forest cover type indicates the closer position to the climax stage in terms of sere spectrum. However, estimated succession index in the forest does not mean the absolute level of successional stage, but comparative assessment in the position of the seral stage among forest cover types.
