Over the past decade, Northwest Nigeria has faced persistent conflict, insecurity and violence. This has been exacerbated in recent years by floods and other climate-related shocks. In 2023, the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) reported 115 000 displacement events – caused by conflict and violence in the Northwest – accounting for 40 percent of all conflict-related displacements in the country. Moreover, between June and November 2024, almost 80 000 people were displaced. This contributed to a total of over 700 000 displaced people in the Northwestern states alone, as of November 2024. In response, IDMC and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) conducted a joint socioeconomic impact assessment in two local government areas in Sokoto State – Tangaza and Tureta – between December 2024 and January 2025. This report presents the findings of that assessment, with the aim of informing programmatic and policy efforts that support durable solutions and resilience-building in the region. It also seeks to inform and strengthen government-led efforts to identify and implement durable solutions for both IDPs and host communities.
