Descripción
The agriculture sector of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic is critical to the food security and livelihoods of the country’s population. The sector is undergoing a transition from rice-based subsistence cultivation towards commercial production. One of the commercial export-oriented crops identified by the government for economic transformation is tea. Multiple factors including agroclimatic conditions and proximity to China, are conducive for the production of tea for export. In a context in which the tea sector has remained underdeveloped, and in alignment with government priorities, this project was developed to enhance the capacities of government and other stakeholders in areas relevant to the advancement of the sector, and for the preparation of a Master Plan for the sector as well as the development of an association bringing together relevant sector stakeholders.
