The country of Niue has around 400 households, concentrated on one small island, most of whom live in rural areas and are engaged in agriculture The government’s National Strategic Action Plan 2016 26 is focused on tourism, agriculture and fisheries and marine resources, and it has prioritized increasing smallholder agricultural productivity and the sustainable management of natural resources However, the government’s agriculture development plan was based on data from the 2009 census In order to better target agricultural policies and programmes to support local food production, updated data needs to be prepared The Government of Niue requested FAO assistance to prepare and implement the 2019 National Agriculture Census ( in order to build technical capacity and ensure that up to date methods, technologies and practices would be used.
