Land scarcity is a critical issue in the Seychelles The area of land in the country amounts to 455 square kilometres, and less than half of it is under environmental protection Just 3 75 square kilometres are dedicated to agriculture, and according to an Agricultural Production Survey carried out in 2015 roughly 40 percent of that land is underutilized by farmers It is estimated that another five square metres of land is arable, and that with more effective land use management, that area could be doubled Poor land use monitoring and a lack of legal protection of agricultural land have compounded these issues In order to rectify the situation, it is essential to identify the potential and optimum use of land in the country This project was designed to enhance capacities to support land evaluation methods and to ensure that the results of these evaluations are managed properly Its implementation supported the first programme of the Seychelles National Agricultural Investment Plan ( which is “Protection and Sustainable Use of Agricultural Land and Water.
