Community Fish Refuges (CFRs) take advantage of flooded rice fields :During the monsoon season, flood water from the Tonle Sap Lake and the Mekong River transform up to 2 000 000 hectares of rice fields into fishing grounds. As the water recedes during the dry season, fish refuges, which become disconnected from other water bodies, act as breeding grounds until the next monsoon. FAO aims to support local authorites and communities to establish the efficient, sustainable management practices tha t will allow CFRs to reach their full potential as an alternative to wild catch fisheries.
