Numerous pastoralist groups in the Sahel and in East Africa own date palms. The palms are harvested and are an important food source for the mainly Moslem population. The droughts of the last thirty years have had tragic consequences for these societies, and the development of oasis agriculture could be one strategy for strengthening the food security of pastoralists in the face of crisis.
