Descripción
The agriculture sector plays a significant role in Georgia’s social and economic development. In 2016, the sector contributed 8 percent to the country’s GDP and employed more than 50 percent of the national workforce (including self-employment). Despite this, Georgia is a net importer of agricultural goods and food products, demonstrating that the sector’s employment figures are not matched by its output. The European Union and FAO have supported the Government under the European Neighbourhood Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (ENPARD) and developed the National Strategy for Agricultural Development on Georgia 2015-2020 (SADG). The SADG’s main objective is to create a development model for the country’s agricultural sector that will ensure the provision of affordable and high-quality food to the Georgian population, while maximizing the use of its export potential in commodities in which the country has a competitive advantage.
