Up to now, French rural areas have been the subject of a large number of specific public measures from the State. In the face of their relative failures, rural policies would
benefit from being part of a more global policy on town-and-country planning. Two questions arise from this proposition. The first one lies in the necessity to justify the aid to rural areas not only for the purposes of equity, but also of general interest. The second one regards the renewed role played by the national government in favour of rural zones in a context of decentralisation of its own competencies.
