The project provided support to six participating countries concerning the implementation of the PSMA. Working to achieve the shared Outcome of improved States’ capacity for the implementation of Port State Measures (PSMs) and complementary Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) operations, measures and tools, the project adopted flexible interventions depending on country context. Progress was supported across four areas: i) Strengthening national policy and legislative frameworks to combat IUU fishing; ii) Strengthening national capacity to carry out MCS operations through PSMs and complementary MCS tools and measures; iii) Increasing transparency and traceability in fisheries sector activities; and iv) Results-based project implementation and the taking up and replication of project-derived best practices. Key results include: five participating countries developing or revising national strategies and action plans to review and align national policies, legislation and MCS systems and operations to the PSMA; assistance provided to selected participant countries concerning the development and adoption of policies and laws consistent with the provisions of the PSMA; the delivery of relevant training and other capacity building engaging national officials; and increasing transparency and traceability in fisheries sector activities, notably through support to relevant international cooperation and consultation meetings and processes.
