Saudi Arabia’s rangelands, which span approximately 73 percent of the national territory, are critical ecosystems that support biodiversity, rural livelihoods and food security. These landscapes are increasingly threatened by overgrazing, climate extremes, urban expansion and the erosion of traditional management systems. In response to these challenges, the FAO–Saudi Arabia Sustainable Rural Agricultural Programme of the FAO–Saudi Arabia Technical Cooperation Programme has developed the "Rangeland management action plan" to guide sustainable restoration and governance of these vital areas. The plan aims to restore rangeland health, productivity and resilience through sustainable grazing practices across 26 pilot sites, covering 8 million ha. It also seeks to strengthen institutional capacity, particularly within the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC), and to engage local communities in participatory planning and implementation. The strategic approach is community-based and adaptive, integrating ecological, social and economic dimensions. It includes mapping and assessment of rangeland resources, establishing community grazing agreements, and implementing restoration techniques such as reseeding, planting native fodder tree and shrub species, applying rangeland resting, and constructing appropriate water‑harvesting structures to support the establishment of plants.
