Different types of information structured by age such as catch at age data, mean weight at age in the stock and in the catch, proportions of mature fish by age and tuning data are very important for analytical methods of stock assessment. There are two sources of errors in these types of information: sampling errors and errors caused by age-reading. The last one could have a major influence on the results of the assessment, and thus on management advice. Ageing errors can cause a substantial red uction in the interannual variability in recruitment, and this effect will tend to increase the estimates of abundance of weak year classes and reduce those of strong year classes. Some ageing criteria were established for sardine. It was recommended that guidelines for age estimation be prepared by FAO for the important pelagic species in the region.
