Automation of libraries and information centers is serious business which requires careful and systematic planning to avoid wastage of huge financial resources and frustration of both staff and users. This paper stresses the importance of strategic planning, highlights possible approaches and recommends the setting up of a project team that will carry automation through the planning stages to the implementation stage.
