The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean face major challenges as they strive for food security and agricultural and rural development. These challenges extend beyond issues such as the relative scarcity of natural resources or vagaries of climate, the difficulties faced by small-scale producers, or the technical problems of primary agricultural production. Food insecurity in the region is not just a matter of production levels; it is also caused by obstacles that prevent a large part of the population from gaining access to the food that is available. This report analyses the variables that affect agricultural development and food security, taking into account technical, economic and social aspects, and evaluates each country in relation to others and within the regional setting, while also examining regional trends.
