It is estimated that 80 percent of food produced globally comes from family farmers, including peasants, Indigenous Peoples, traditional communities, fishers, mountain farmers, pastoralists, and other groups who live in every region of the world and farm in all environmental conditions. The importance of family farming in terms of food production, employment, the preservation of local traditions and cultures, and the future sustainability of the planet cannot be understated. The world’s attention was called to the critical role of family farming in 2014, during the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF). The Year was successful in raising awareness and centring family farming on agendas and in policies, and identified requirements and opportunities to further solidify and institutionalize the importance of family farming in various programmes and arrangements. To build upon the IYFF, in December 2017, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) launched the United Nations Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF), which is focused on addressing cross-cutting policy issues that affect family farmers. The UNGA tasked the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) with leading the implementation of the Decade in collaboration with governments and other institutions and organizations.
