dc.descriptionA critical problem facing the broader Mediterranean region is the unsustainable trajectory of agrifood production, consumption and practices. Factors such as population growth, urbanization and globalization have been increasing food demand and influencing food consumption patterns, leading to unsustainable practices. These changes in the agrifood system have placed severe pressure on natural resources, contributing to land degradation, water scarcity, biodiversity loss and the depletion of marine stocks. The Mediterranean region’s socio-cultural and economic diversity has added another layer of complexity to the problem. Disparities in development and income between countries, as well as within them, are stark. Additionally, regional conflicts, migration pressures and the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic have added to the stress on agrifood systems and livelihoods. The project aimed to tackle these interrelated issues by (i) promoting a systems approach to agrifood systems transformation, emphasizing cross-sectoral collaboration to analyse interconnections between different challenges, drivers, outcomes and trade-offs for evidence-based policy-making, and (ii) working collaboratively at regional level through the Sustainable Food Systems in the Mediterranean (SFS-MED) Platform, a multistakeholder initiative designed to accompany regional stakeholders in their agrifood systems transformation efforts.
