Resumen
Descripción
The fisheries sector in Malawi is crucial to the country’s economy as a source of employment, food, and biodiversity, supporting the livelihoods of almost 1.6 million people in lakeshore communities. Lake Malombe, which shares a close link with Lake Malawi through the Upper Shire River, has witnessed some of the most devastating changes in landings and species composition. Fish stocks in the lake have dropped significantly and landings continue to decline, in particular as a result of excessive fishing effort, high levels of non-compliance, catchment and habitat degradation and the impacts of climate change. The project aimed to build resilience in the inland fisheries sector, improve understanding of how to improve management, provide policy advice and foresight on the future of the fisheries sector and provide a basis for more effective management of the resource in the face of climate change.
