| dc.description | Fisheries in the Mediterranean support the livelihoods of a significant number of stakeholders, yet many of the assessed stocks in the region continue to be classified as overexploited. To promote sustainability, it is important to develop specific fisheries management plans. When these plans deal with shared stocks among several countries, there is a need for international coordination and standardized methodologies. As one of the largest areas of occurrence of shared stocks in the Mediterranean, the Adriatic Sea urgently requires international coordination on fisheries management. Within the framework of its long running AdriaMed project to promote scientific cooperation to support responsible fisheries in the Adriatic Sea, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) implemented this project to improve capacity for fisheries monitoring, research and preparation of scientific advice for fisheries management in the Adriatic. Using a multidisciplinary and coordinated approach, it aimed to enhance fisheries management throughout the countries bordering the Adriatic: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro and Slovenia. | |
