The workshop was organized and financed by project GCP/RAF/302/EEC "Improvement of the legal framework for fisheries cooperation, management and development of coastal States of West Africa", within the framework of the priorities defined in its work programme, and in response to a recommendation of the round table on management and regulation of fisheries in the area of competence of the Sub-Regional Fisheries Commission, also held in Dakar, Senegal from 1-3 July 1996. The round table considere d that for many reasons such as their nature, their transboundary character and their interdependence, small pelagic stocks should take priority over other resources as the object of a dialogue between the States concerned. The workshop brought together representatives of Cape Verde, the Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal and Sierra Leone as well as representatives of States and agencies and researchers concerned by the management of small pelagics in the region. The wor kshop examined, notably, the situation of small pelagic resources in the divisions concerned, the world situation of small pelagics and in particular consumption patterns, economic aspects of their exploitation, general aspects of management policies and conservation measures implemented. Many recommendations on future activities were set out, in particular on the role of and mechanisms for regional and sub-regional cooperation.
