The Second Session of the Working Party on Fishery Economics and Planning was held in Belize, from 8 to 11 December 1997. The meeting was attended by experts from eight WECAFC member countries. The main topics discussed were the economic importance and role of fisheries in the region and related needs and potential for regional cooperation and training. The key issue was the future of WECAFC and examination of the options for its restructuring and reinforcement, taking into account its central i mportance as an instrument of regional cooperation. The meeting formulated recommendations on this matter for action by FAO and the member countries.
