Globally, fisheries and aquaculture make substantial contributions to the food security and livelihoods of millions of people. However, the sustainability of the sector is under pressure from the combined effects of overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, climate change, aquatic animal diseases, food loss and waste in aquatic value chains. Unless addressed, these will have irreversible consequences on those who depend on the sector and impinge progress towards the goals of long-term sustainability set forth in, inter alia, the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly in Low-Income Food-Deficit Countries, where fisheries are critical for food security and livelihoods. Against this background, the project aimed to contribute to the sustainable use and conservation of fisheries resources at a global level, and focusing on ten beneficiary countries: Colombia, Grenada, Guinea, Honduras, Indonesia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Mozambique, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines. The lack of social protection systems or social assistance schemes, and the role that area-based fisheries management can play in biodiversity conservation were also addressed by the project.
