This outlook paper emphasizes the international dimensions of Indonesia's forestry sector and the challenges facing forest management, not least of which is the conversion of degraded and other forests. Four scenarios are presented: socio-economic development stalls, unsustainable growth, low-growth development and sustainable development. The importance of economic development in the forest sector and of improving governance are singled out as priority issues.
