This brief outlines the agriculture and food security situation across Southern Africa, where an estimated 38.8 million people in eight SADC countries face acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above) despite a recovery in 2025/26 cereal production. It highlights three converging risks to the 2026/27 agricultural season – an 82 percent probability of El Niño onset, fertilizer prices nearly 80 percent above pre-conflict levels following Persian Gulf supply chain disruptions, and active transboundary animal and plant health threats including Foot and Mouth Disease, Rift Valley Fever, Goss's Wilt and locust infestations. The brief also details FAO's ongoing support to Member States across emergency response, food security early warning, and anticipatory action preparedness.
