With the increased focus on achieving progress in line with Egypt’s Sustainable Development Vision: 2030, there was a need to consolidate efforts to improve rural incomes and enhance food security. These two elements were also imbedded in the strategic objectives of the Sustainable Agricultural Development Strategy towards 2030, which includes increasing the productivity of both land and water units, enhancing the competitiveness of agricultural products in domestic and international markets, and raising the degree of food security in strategic crops. Improvement of the seed varieties used by farmers was recognised as one of the main areas through which these goals could be realized. Imported hybrids and seed varieties constitute a burden on farmers and the government. The prices of competing imported varieties are relatively high and impose a challenge on farmers. Imported hybrids and seed varieties are also a burden on the trade balance and foreign reserves of Egypt.
