Several public institutions share principal responsibility for Agricultural Health and Food Control (AHFC) and the AHFC system in Barbados. The current AHFC approach is hampered by a limited and outdated legal framework, inadequate resources, and the lack of a communication and co-ordination mechanism that supports interagency co-operation for the enforcement of laws and regulations.Considering the challenges of the AHFC, a National Agricultural Health and Food Control Programme (NAHFCP) (2009-2018) was established, proposing formal mechanisms to facilitate greater coordination, cooperation and management of the modernized AHFCS. In October 2020, the Cabinet of Barbados agreed that a single agency system be established, based on a single, unified agency for all aspects of agricultural health and food control, among other things. In this context, it was necessary to prepare an implementation plan and determine the resources for the establishment of the agency, potential impact on the private sector, and the redistribution and allocation of responsibilities in the current departments of the ministries of agriculture, health, fisheries and commerce.
