Descripción

Drought is a normal phenomenon in all types of climates, but it is more pronounced in dry regions like that of the Near East where its recurrence is even likely to increase in the future, in terms of both frequency and severity. Despite the long time existence of drought, its management is still not optimal because of the way it is generally perceived and misunderstood by policy makers and technicians. During recent years however, a lot of progress has been made, with a major shift from the perc eption of considering drought as an emergency phenomenon, to long term planning for efficient management. But a lot of efforts are still needed to elaborate and implement drought mitigation plans, for which most countries are still in the need for great help to reduce their vulnerability and build their capacity to combat drought effects in an efficient manner.
