dc.descriptionTrees are essential to life on earth – playing important economic, ecological, and cultural roles. However, the threats to trees are diverse and many, and there is a need for an increased conservation focus on tree species. Without conservation assessments of trees, how can we effectively safeguard the world’s tree species, their habitats, their associated species and ecosystem services? The Global Tree Assessment has filled this knowledge gap for trees through innovative and collaborative methods. The Global Tree Assessment identifies and prioritises the tree species around the world of greatest conservation concern. We engaged with over 450 experts, partnered with more than 50 institutions across all continents. The results will have far-reaching positive consequences for mobilising action to protect the most threatened tree species from extinction, as well as safeguard and restore biodiverse landscapes. The Global Tree Assessment shows that over a third of the world’s 60,000 trees species are threatened with extinction, with the results available and downloadable in the GlobalTree Portal. These results emphasise the need to re-think planning and action of biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration, recognising the global importance of tree species. This change in approach, catalysed by the results of the Global Tree Assessment will have far-reaching positive consequences for mobilising action to turn the tide and reversing deforestation and forest degradation to protect the world’s trees.
